Volunteering can be a great way to give back to the community, to meet new friends, and to gain valuable skills. SHARE Family & Community Services is built on a strong volunteer foundation. Without our volunteers, we would not be able to facilitate many of our programs and services! You may only have a few hours a week or month that you can give to SHARE, but every little bit helps in a huge way!

Volunteer at Community Events & Fundraisers

Join SHARE in the community at various events all year long!

Quite often, SHARE will be asked to attend a community event, parade or fundraiser. Volunteers at these various events collect food, cash donations, hang out with SHARE Bear, or educate the community about SHARE programs & services. Time commitment can vary, and often times there can be multiple events in a weekend (or within a week). You set your schedule, and come out to help when you can. Volunteer at the Food Bank

The Food Bank provides food hampers at the Port Moody, Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam SHARE Food Banks for those who are in need. Volunteers need to be over the age of 19. Most of the volunteer roles involve lifting. A minimum of 6-month commitment is preferred.

Volunteer with the Better at Home Program for Seniors

Tri-Cities Better at Home program helps seniors with simple day-to-day tasks so that they can continue to live independently in their own homes and remain connected to their communities Volunteers are needed to provide the following specific services:

  1. Friendly Visiting Volunteers: The Tri Cities Better at Home Program requires volunteers for Friendly Home Visiting Services or regular Phone Visits. Friendly Visiting Services for seniors are aimed at reducing the social isolation experienced by older adults. This does not involve personal home care or driving clients.
  2. Food Support Service: The Tri Cities Better at Home Program requires volunteers for the Food Support services. Due to physical limitations of our registered seniors, volunteers support seniors with delivering food hampers to their homes. Volunteers pick up the food hampers from SHARE Food Bank in Port Moody and deliver to our seniors in the Tri Cities.
  3. Grocery Shoppers: The Tri Cities Better at Home Program requires volunteers for the Grocery Shopping service. Volunteers assist our registered seniors by taking their grocery order by phone or email and process the order with our registered grocery store. Another option is the in-person shopping; volunteers pick up our registered seniors and take them to the grocery stores in Tri-Cities for shopping. In-person shopping provides seniors with additional opportunity to get physically active and connect with other community members.
  4. Transportation Services: The Tri Cities Better at Home Program requires volunteers for the Transportation Services. Trained volunteer drivers, provide seniors with transportation to their doctor’s appointments, and other eligible personal appointments such as Pharmacy, Recreation facilities, Banks, and Libraries…etc. The personal appointments are within the Tri-Cities and medical appointments are across metro Vancouver. Using their own vehicles or agency vehicle, volunteers pick up their assigned seniors at their doorstep, take them to their appointment and return them home.
  5. Senior’s Information Line: The Tri Cities Better at Home Program requires volunteers to answer our Tri- Cities Senior’s Information Line, which is dedicated to increase seniors’ immediate access to information and provide one to one resource navigation support. Trained volunteers support seniors in accessing appropriate information and services that are offered by SHARE or other services providers in the community.
  6. Handy Helper: The Tri Cities Better at Home Program requires volunteers who can assist seniors in the Tri-Cities with minor repairs. Repairs include minor plumbing, carpentry, and electrical work. These do not include extensive renovations, furniture moving, painting or exterior work. Mileage reimbursement is available.

Through play, craft, snack and circle time, the program guides parents in establishing a routine and interacting with their children, and provides a safe and welcoming environment for every family.

Early Childhood Development Assistants assist families’ participation by engaging the parents and children in the program through conversation and play. Criminal record check is required.

Commitment: Volunteering for at least 6 months and one session per week. Weekdays 9:00-12:30pm at various locations or SHARE Family Resource Centres.

Volunteer with our English Practice Groups

English Practice Groups are FREE, including: drop-in and volunteer-led conversation groups assisting newcomers with practicing their English Language skills, developing friendships, and learn more about community resources. The groups are for 19 years or older.

Volunteer English Practice Group Facilitators ensure that weekly group meetings are welcoming, respectful, and safe for everyone; and facilitate group conversation on topics that are of interest to the participants. Groups meet at different days/time and various locations across the Tri-Cities. Criminal record check is required.
